The first black woman to win Best Actress in a comedy series since 1983! This is huge. It was huge when Debbie Allen won it 35 years ago and it’s huge now. I am super excited for her and the millions of women of colour and little girls out there that this will inspire.
We know there are not enough roles made for the black woman, to share her narrative, to ensure that she is fairly represented. We know that many of the few roles available are unfairly infused with negative stereotypes that only perpetuate divisions and continue to tell stories that neither propel her or applaud her victories. Not every black woman snaps their neck, has multiple children out of wedlock, likes rap and cooks fried chicken. We are doctors, composers, lawyers and geologists. We are curvy, stick thin, natural hair and Loc wearing. We are vegan, feminists, activists and politicians. We are students, professors, policy makers and progressives who just want to be seen as such. Thank you to Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay, Oprah, Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, Phylicia Rashad and Tracee Ellis Ross for debunking myths one movie, one character and one script at a time. #historymakers #gamechangers
